Most of us believe that we are good listeners. But it is often not so. Most of the time, we do not listen to what the other person is saying and just want them to finish so we can start talking.
If we want to listen well, we must try to understand the point the other person is making. To do so, we can ask them once they have finished talking: "The way I understand it, this is what you meant … am I right?" In this way, the other person will know that we have listened to them.
If we are not right, they can correct us and say: "No, that’s not what I meant. I wanted to say that …" So, we will know that we have understood the point they are trying to make.
To show that we have listened to them attentively, we can express it in one word or sentence. There is no need to repeat their exact words; we can just convey the meaning of what they have said.
