Syphilis

Symptoms: Painless sores, skin symptoms.

Complications: Without treatment, syphilis can enter the tertiary stage, damaging the brain, heart, liver, bone and other organs. In the asymptomatic stage, syphilis can be transmitted from the pregnant mother to the infant, causing abnormalities and retardation in the child.

Diagnosis and treatment: Syphilis is diagnosed by a blood test. The test is performed in two stages. If the initial test is positive, the blood test should be re-tested and confirmed. Syphilis will be treated with injectable antibiotics if confirmed. The response to treatment is effective in non-advanced cases.

The sex partner(s) should be examined and treated as needed.
