Syphilis

Complications: Without treatment, syphilis moves from stage to stage until it reaches the tertiary stage, damaging the brain, heart, liver, bone and other organs. In the asymptomatic stage, syphilis can be transmitted from the pregnant woman to the infant, causing abnormalities and retardation in the child.

Diagnosis and treatment: Syphilis is diagnosed by a blood test. The test is performed in two stages. If the initial test is positive, the blood is re-tested and confirmed.

Syphilis is treated with injectable antibiotics and is curable in early stages. The sex partner(s) should be examined and treated as needed.
