It was a whirlwind romance in Mulangeni village in Chief Chanje’s chiefdom.
Moses Phiri and Loveness Banda had known each other only a month when they started to discuss the possibility of marriage.
Four years after marrying Loveness he married another wife, and yet another a few years later. Now he has four wives and nine children.
Moses told the Lusaka Times that one wife could not satisfy his desires as a man.
According to the report the four women refer to each other as ‘friends”. They each have a share of the land and a burnt brick house. Each wife has two days with their man.
Moses said he takes HIV very seriously. He and his wives test for the virus regularly. He says he is faithful to them and having many wives keeps him from having affairs....'for now'.
Polygamy is common practice in some Zambian cultures. Moses claims to keep it clean, but HIV doesn’t respect custom, religion or tribe. Regardless of your belief, the more sexual partners you have, the higher the risk of infection.
