HIV stands for human immunodeficiency virus. AIDS stands for acquired immunodeficiency syndrome. HIV is the virus that causes AIDS. HIV is considered a sexually transmitted infection (STI) because it can be transmitted through certain sexual behaviors. This means that HIV cannot be spread through everyday contact such as shaking hands, hugging or kissing.
