External reproductive organs in females and their functions

  • Vaginal orifice: is the external opening of the vaginal canal, vaginal canal or birth canal is the place of sexual intercourse and it allows sperms to go into the inside of the uterus.
  • Hymen: A thin membrane that surrounds the vaginal orifice. It has an opening or small openings to allow the menstrual blood to flow out. It is torn in the first complete intercourse and this might and might not be accompanied with minimal drops of blood.
  • Urethral opening: opening for urination.
  • Labia minora: two erectile folds of sensitive skin between the labia majora on both sides of the vaginal and urethral openings. It has sexual functions and provide pleasure during sexual acts.
  • Labia majora: Two spongy folds of skin on either side of the vaginal opening covering and protecting the genital parts.
  • Clitoris: An erectile hooded organ at the junction of the upper parts of the labia, it contains high concentration of nerve endings.
