Many people are heartbroken when they test HIV positive. They feel like the diagnosis means the end of their lives and dreams. But that was not the case with Princess Kasune from Zambia.
In a recent interview with the BBC, Kasune spoke about how she went public about her HIV status, defying her husband, church and family’s wishes for her to keep her status private. She said she felt the need to break the stigma around being HIV positive so that people could know the truth about living with the virus. She wants everyone to know that you can still have full and happy lives when you are HIV positive.
Her biggest dream is to see an HIV free generation. And that starts with being open about your status.
Kasune was elected as a Member of Parliament in August. And in her first speech, she stressed on the importance of everyone getting tested but especially for members of parliament. She says that leaders set the example for the rest of the country. So it’s important for parliamentarians in particular to go for HIV tests in public or share their HIV status.
But it is everyone’s responsibility to fight the HIV virus. And fighting HIV and the stigma around being HIV positive starts with going for a test. Go with your partner so you can find out your results together. An HIV free generation is possible and it begins with you.
